Awakening: Salisbury Musical Society

This summer, head over to Salisbury Cathedral for the annual ‘Awakening: Salisbury Musical Society’ concert which marks the summer solstice. Join the Salisbury Cathedral Choir and Salisbury Musical Society on 22^nd June 2024 at 7:30pm for a marvellous evening of music.

Awakening is a choir musical piece based on the events of the summer Solstice at Stonehenge near Salisbury. The performance involves 16 spiritual poems by Stephen Feltham. Awakening portrays the cycle of hope experienced by humanity as it progresses through the celestial cycle exhibited by the equinoxes and solstices.

30th Anniversary of Women’s Ordination

On Saturday 15 June 2024 Salisbury Cathedral celebrates the 30th anniversary of the first women’s ordinations in the Church of England with a special service held at Salisbury Cathedral. It features many women speakers who have been ordained since 1994.

Bishop June Osborne, former Dean of Salisbury, who was one of the first woman to be ordained in 1994 will be there to preach. Other female priests ordained in Salisbury at this time, as well as those currently living in the diocese will be in attendance for the anniversary.

Adventure Cinema

Watch the classic movies on a huge open-air screen under the stars! Salisbury Cathedral’s grounds host several movie nights including Back to the Future, Grease, Top Gun and Bridget Jones Diary from 29^th to 31^st August 2024. Bring a camp chair, nibbles and a cheeky drink and enjoy the films!

Old Sarum

This summer, Old Sarum goes medieval with the Knights’ Tournament at Old Sarum. Discover one of history’s most spectacular sporting contests as medieval knights compete in the ultimate test of skill. Arrows will fly, swords will clash, and the winner will be decided in the grand finale.

With the backdrop of Old Sarum and Wiltshire, this action-packed event is one for the history books. Four rival knights don their armour and battle for glory, as spectators cheer their champion and merry music fills the air.

There’s also lots to do for kids including a place to test their aim with have-a-go archery sessions. Also, what medieval tournament is complete without a Jester. Meet the castle Fool for some age-old mischief, starring fire-eating, fire-breathing, and fire juggling

Stonehenge

The Summer Solstice is the marquee event of the summer in the Salisbury area. From the evening of 20^th June to the morning of Friday 21^st June, Stonehenge plays host to crowds that gather to celebrate the shortest night of the year and the sunrise on 21^st June 2024.

Stonehenge is one of the world’s most famous prehistoric monuments, having been built around 2600BC. Many communities have used Stonehenge in various ways, plenty of them recognising the area as having spiritual significance.

What makes the summer solstice so special in this space is the fact that it has been experienced as a spiritual event by people for thousands of years. To this day, various cultures from across the UK and around the world celebrate the longest day. Some come to Stonehenge to experience it in person, others celebrate with feasts and celebrations
