Stargazing Near Stonehenge

Why Wiltshire Is Perfect for Stargazing

There are few places in England where the ancient and the astronomical collide quite so dramatically as Wiltshire. Sprawling countryside across Salisbury Plain makes it one of the largest remaining areas of the UK with completely dark skies.

The landscape helps enormously as Salisbury Plain offers wide, flat horizons in nearly every direction. There are few obstructions of the rising constellations, no tree canopies blocking your view overhead. You get vast sky and when conditions are right, that sky rewards you handsomely.

Stonehenge as a backdrop adds an atmosphere and standing beneath the Milky Way, knowing that people have gathered on this plain to observe the sky for hundreds of years makes it a special place to visit.

Best Places for Stargazing Near Stonehenge

Salisbury Plain. The higher ground of Salisbury Plain, particularly areas around Tilshead and Orcheston, offers elevated views and is far enough from Amesbury and Salisbury to notice a real difference in sky darkness.

River Avon Valley. Drop down into the valleys carved by the River Avon and you’ll find a quieter, more sheltered kind of darkness. It’s a gentler experience perfect for families or anyone who’d rather lie on a picnic blanket than brave an exposed hilltop in winter.

From Our Campsite. If you’re camping at Brades Acre near Stonehenge and there are some excellent campsites in the area you may not need to go anywhere at all. Our rural campsite offers surprisingly dark skies. Step out of your tent at 2am, lie back, and you might catch satellites, meteors, or a whole arm of the galaxy drifting overhead.

Best Time of Year for Stargazing in Wiltshire

Winter nights are long and the sky can be exceptionally clear once the cloudy British weather passes but make sure wrap up warm for well below zero if you’re out past midnight.

Summer offers warmth and the Milky Way core but shorter nights. Autumn is arguably the sweet spot because nights are long enough after sunset to get genuinely dark skies, the weather is often mild enough to stay out comfortably.

Always plan around the moon as a full moon washes out faint stars entirely. The days either side of a new moon are your prime window, particularly the week before, when moonrise is delayed until well after midnight.
